BOOTH, Edward Thomas (1840-1890). Rough Notes on the Birds Observed during twenty-five years' shooting and collection in the British Islands.
London: Taylor & Francis for R. H. Porter and Dulau & Co., 1881-1887. Folio (445 x 360 mm). 114 hand-colored lithographic plates after Edward Neale, 2 hand-colored maps. Contemporary green half morocco over green cloth-covered boards, by Ramage, covers ruled in gilt, spines in six compartments with raised bands, the bands highlighted with double fillets, lettered in the second and third compartments, the others with elaborate repeat pattern centering on a large neo-classical tool incorporating a bird with outstretched wings and a flower swag, surrounded by small tools and stylized floral cornerpieces, within a double fillet border with a dog-tooth roll above and below, marbled endpapers, t.e.g. Condition: some light spotting to the first and last few leaves; spines faded, extremities bumped and rubbed. Provenance: Henry Forrester (armorial bookplate); Lynn Abbott Trust. a finely-bound set of the first and only edition of this valuable and attractive work, including a "series of well written field notes accompanied by good plates" (Zimmer). Booth, a wealthy amateur naturalist, was an accomplished taxidermist as well as an enthusiastic sportsman. The plates were drawn by Neale (1833-1904) from the naturalistic tableaux of stuffed birds shot and prepared by Booth, most of which are now in the Booth Museum in Brighton, England.
