BRAYBOURNE, Wyndham W. Knatchbull-Hugessen, 3rd Baron (1885-1915), and Charles CHUBB. The Birds of South America.
London, R.H. Porter, John Wheldon & Co., [1913-] 1917. 2 volumes bound in one (text: large 8vo; atlas of plates: 4to, both: 278 x 190mm). 38 hand-colored lithographed plates, printed by Bale & Danielsson, after drawings by Henrik Grönvold, double-page colored map. Later red half morocco, spine lettered in gilt, original printed wrappers to part I of the atlas of plates bound at the back. Condition: plates 31, 33 and 36 shaved with loss of imprint, map bound through center-fold; spine slightly faded. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. a noble reminder of what might have been. The larger work was a victim of the war: the intention had been to publish 16 volumes with 400 plates, but the publication was abandoned after the first volume when Lord Brabourne was killed in action at Neuve-Chapelle in 1915. Harry Kirke Swann decided to publish the fine series of plates which had already been prepared by Grönvold. This work is usually found in two volumes: the text as a large 8vo volume amd the plates a somewhat larger 4to. According to a note on the wrappers, the plates were issued in two parts, and were limited to 200 copies. Anker 56; Nissen IVB 129; Wood p.253; Zimmer p.85.
