BUTLER, Arthur Gardiner (1844-1925). Birds of Great Britain and Ireland order Passeres, complete in two volumes. Hull & London: Brumby & Clarke, Ltd., [n.d. but 1907-1908]. 2 volumes, 4to (288 x 235 mm). 115 chromolithographic plates by H. Grönvold or F.W. Frohawk (107 of birds, 8 of eggs). Original blue buckram-backed blue cloth-covered boards, spines lettered in gilt, t.e.g. Condition: some light spotting, occasional very light soiling; lightly scuffed, extremities bumped. a fine copy, featuring the work of two of the best known ornithological artists of their time. This work is essentially a reprint of the first two volumes of Butler's six-volume British Birds their nests and eggs (Hull & London: 1896-1899), but is more desirable as the uncolored plates of the earlier work are here replaced with good quality chromolithographic plates.
