CRAWSHAY, Richard. The Birds of Tierra del Fuego. London: Bernard Quaritch, 1907. 4to (280 x 205 mm). Half-title. 23 photogravure landscape views, 21 hand-colored lithographic plates by John Gerrard Keulemans, printed by West, Newman, lithographic map printed in black and two colors, extra-illustrated with three loosely inserted rejected 'pattern' plates (colored by Keulemans, two inscribed by Crawshay). Contemporary morocco-backed green cloth, spine in six compartments with raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt, t.e.g. Condition: spine faded. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. first edition. one of three hundred copies, this copy out of series, but with the unique addition of the three rejected 'pattern' plates colored by the artist. The 21 hand colored plates are fine examples of the work of John Gerrard Keulemans (1842-1912): "the major bird book illustrator for 30 years at the end of the 19th century" (Christine Jackson. Dictionary of Bird Artists p.314). Part of Keuleman's job as an illustrator would have been to prepare a set of plates that were first vetted by the author and then used as the pattern which the colorists used when finishing the plates. The present rejected pattern plates represent an early stage in that process (for the plates facing pp.49, 79 and 121). Nissen IVB 212; Wood p. 305; Zimmer p. 151.
