London: published by the author, October 1880-1881. 2 parts in one volume, folio (547 x 381 mm). 10 lithographic plates by William Hart (7) or H.C. Richter (3), printed by Walter, with later hand-coloring. Modern red morocco gilt by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, single fillet gilt border to covers, spine in six compartments with raised bands, green morocco lettering-pieces in the second and third compartments, the others outlined in gilt, gilt turn-ins, original upper wrapper to part I bound in at the front in place of a title, upper wrapper to part II at the back, t.e.g. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. a very fine copy of gould's final project. Only part I of this monograph was complete at the time of Gould's death, although the covers and text for part II had been prepared, and are included in the present copy. The Pittidae, or Pittas, are a (usually) colorful family of about 32 species of forest-dwelling birds from tropical India, Asia and Australasia (a couple of species live in Africa). The family name, Pitta, is the word for "small bird" in the Telugu language of Andhra Pradesh in India. Nissen IVB 377; Sauer 28
