Marseilles: Barlatier-Feissat et Demonchy, "1859" [but later]. 4to (312 x 240 mm). Half-title, "Librairie Lafitte" leaf at end. 20 lithographic plates by and after J. Susimi, finely hand-colored and heightened with gum arabic. Condition: small chips to upper outer blank corner of the first six leaves, inked number partially erased from foot of "Note des Auteurs" leaf, occasional light spotting to text, small crease to plate facing p.308; joints tender and slightly split, extremities rubbed, front inner hinge strengthened, stitching broken at front, endpapers and blanks browned and chipped. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. the de luxe half morocco remainder issue of this extensive french regional ornithology. The birds of Provence and the surrounding regions "are systematically described and their specific and generic characters fully detailed. The hand-colored plates are remarkably well done; indeed the whole work is a valuable and practical treatise on the subject" (Wood). It seems likely that the copies of this work recorded with 21 plates are from an original or early issue. The plate of the "Cygne de Bewick" is not present in the present copy, but is not called for in list of plates which details only 20 plates. The plate list (published by Librairie Lafitte) also includes a note (in French) to the effect that the Librairie Lafitte had acquired the remaining examples of this work, and that they had had some examples colored with the greatest care. These were offered for 15 francs unbound, or, as here, 20 francs bound in half morocco with gilt top edges (these prices altered in manuscript). Cf. Fine Bird Books (1990) p. 109 (21 plates); Nissen IVB 475; cf. Ronsil 1482; cf. Wood p. 406.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
