[London: 1833-1835]. Large folio (550 x 365mm). Without text. 10 hand-colored lithographic plates by and after Edward Lear, all printed by Charles Hullmandel. Expertly bound to style using contemporary deep burgundy morocco gilt covers, with wide decorative gilt borders, the central panel on the upper cover with later gilt lettering "Edward Lear / Toucans / 1834", modern spine in six compartments with raised bands, with elaborate overall tooling in gilt, gilt turn-ins, contemporary marbled endpapers. Condition: light toning to plate edges; lover cover scuffed, bottom edges worn, corners exposed. Provenance: Jorge Casares (armorial bookplate). a selection of lear's playful toucans, the most famous plates from gould's first monograph. Among the best of his ornithological illustrations, the Toucans as drawn by Lear have been widely praised as the livliest images Gould ever published. This selection is from the first edition, with Lear's signature present in each image (his name was wiped from the stones for the second edition published from 1852-1854), are attractively presented in a binding which re-uses 19th-century covers.
