SALVIN, Osbert (1835-1898), and Frederick Du Cane GODMAN (1834-1919). Biologia Centrali-Americana: Aves.
[London: by the authors], 1879-1904. 4 volumes (text: 3 vols.; plates: 1 vol.), 4to (306 x 242 mm). 84 hand-coloured lithographic plates by and after John Gerrard Keulemans (82) and Edward Neale (2), printed by M. and N. Hanhart, a few by Mintern Brothers. Blue cloth, titled in gilt on spines, t.e.g. Condition: small stab-holes or tears to outer blank margins of three titles, and one or two following leaves; stitching weak in the plate volume. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. 'a sumptuous monograph of the birds of central america' (zimmer): the complete ornithological section from a massive work on the flora and fauna of mexico and central america. The entire work runs to 57 volumes and was published from 1879-1915 in 257 parts, 74 of which related to birds. The present section includes descriptions of 1413 bird species from 539 genera and 78 families. The authors themselves made several visits to to the region, and, with the help of other collectors, gathered more than 55,000 specimens which they eventually gave to the British Museum. Salvin died before the completion of vol. III and the work was finished by Godman with the assistance of R. B. Sharpe and W. R. Ogilvie-Grant. The 84 plates by Keulemans and Neale depict 149 species.
