SCLATER, Philip Lutley ( 1829-1913), & William Henry HUDSON (1841-1922) Argentine Ornithology. A descriptive catalogue of the birds of the Argentine Republic. London: Taylor & Francis for R.H. Porter, 1888-1889. 2 volumes, 8vo (256 by 160 mm.), Titles with wood-engraved vignettes. 20 hand-coloured lithographed plates by J.G. Keulemans, wood-engraved illustrations. Original boards with letterpress titling and text to covers, rebacked using black cloth, uncut. Condition: small glue stains to title and final leaf in vol.I, plate V loosely inserted and with light spotting to upper margin, plate VII with small section of outer blank margin torn away; covers browned with small old dampstains and slightly scuffed, later endpapers. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. first edition and rare: limited to 200 copies signed by the authors, this numbered 28. One of the rarest of Hudson's works, with very fine plates by John Gerrard Keulemans (1842-1912) "the major bird book illustrator" (Jackson) of his generation. "This important work treats of 434 species. The description and synonymy of each species are given by Sclater, Hudson supplying notes on habits, song etc." (Wood). Fine Bird Books (1990) p.139; cf.
