[London: printed for H.M.S.O., sold by Longmans & Co and others, 1881]. Large 4to (305 x 240 mm). Small format 'half-title' tipped-in. 30 hand-colored lithographic plates by J. Smit, printed by Hanhart, illustrations. Contemporary blue cloth, titled in gilt on spine. Condition: title lacking; spine somewhat faded. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. the complete ornithological report, with excellent illustrations, on the circa 900 specimens collected by the expedition. "The collection [of birds] was formed under the superintendence of Mr. John Murray, one of the naturalists of the Expedition, and the skins were chiefly prepared by Mr. Frederick Pearcey, who accompanied the vessel as taxidermist" ('Introduction', p.1). H.M.S. "Challenger" sailed over 70,000 miles during her extended voyage of exploration. Fine Bird Books (1990) p.147; Nissen IVB 842; Zimmer p.633.
