TEMMINCK, Coenraad Jacob (1778-1858). Manuel d'ornithologie ou tableau systématique des oiseaux qui se trouvent en Europe ... Seconde édition considérablement augmentée. Paris: chez H. Cousin (vols. I-IV), Edmond D'Ocagne (vol.III), Ve. Legras of Amsterdam (vol.IV), 1820-1840. 4 volumes in 3, 8vo. Half-titles. [With:] Johann Carl WERNER (1798-1856). Atlas des Oiseaux d'Europe d'après C.-J. Temminck. Paris: H. Cousin, [1826-]1842. 1 vol. bound in three, 8vo. Half-title. 529 (of 531) hand-colored lithographic plates after Werner, including the "Guillemot bridé" plate not called-for in the plate list. Together, 2 works in 6 volumes, 8vo (206 x 123 mm). Uniform contemporary green morocco by Clarke & Bedford, covers with triple fillet border, with the centrally-placed gilt-blocked crests of Earl Fitzwilliam surmounted by an earls' coronet, spines in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in gilt in the second and third compartments, the others with repeat decoration in gilt, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, g.e. Condition: [first work] light spotting to first and last few leaves in vol. I and first few leaves in vol. II; [second work:] vol. I with half-title, title and text spotted, and light old dampstaining to upper margins of most plates, occasional light spotting to about 12 plates in the other volumes, "Plongeon Imbrin" plate discolored on verso; light scuffing to extremities. Provenance: Earl Fitzwilliam (bindings); William Charles De Meuron, Earl Fitzwilliam (1872-1953, armorial bookplate dated 1920); Lynn Abbott Trust. the fitzwilliam set of these rare complimentary works. The text is a second edition of Temminck's important handbook first published in 1815. It is here greatly enlarged "to include some of the non-European avifauna, and to furnish descriptions or mention of species new to science" (Wood). The plates were produced by Werner, a natural history artist at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, as an adjunct to Temminck's work. The present set is unfortunately missing two plates. A comparison with a perfect copy would identify the missing images, but the list of subjects does not help.
