London: Reeve & Benham, 1850[-1849-1848]. 4 parts in one volume, 4to (305 x 242 mm). Half-title, general title and four part titles. 55 plates (35 hand-colored) by B.Waterhouse Hawkins, W. Wing, J.D.C. Sowerby, A. Adams and others. Recent half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, spine gilt in six compartments with raised bands, dark brown morocco label to the second compartment, the others with simple repeat decoration in gilt. Condition: some light marginal browning, old dampstain to plate IV in the 'Mollusca' section. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. rare: the official report of the zoological results of this extended surveying voyage amongst the islands of indonesia, singapore, hong kong, japan and korea. Only one copy of this work is listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty five years. Following the introduction, the results are presented in four sections by various authors: John Edward Gray (1800-1875) Vertebrata (8 hand-colored lithographs by B. Waterhouse Hawkins or W. Wing); Sir John Richardson. (1787-1865) Fishes (10 uncolored lithographs); Arthur Adams (1820-1878) and Lovell Reeve (1814-1865) Mollusca (3 hand-colored engravings, 21 lithographs (20 hand-colored), by Sowerby or Adams); Arthur Adams & Adam White (1817-1879) Crustacea , 13 lithographs (4 hand-colored) all by Wing.
