[CHILDREN'S NATURAL HISTORY] The Illustrated Book of Natural History in Four Parts. Philadelphia: Henry B. Ashmead, 1859. 4 volumes. Small folio (310 x 250 mm). 8 plates in each part for a total of 32 oil-printed color plates. Publisher's brown cloth stamped in gilt and blind with central gilt title vignette to each volume depicting, an elephant, a flying fish, a grouse and a snake respectively. Condition: some minor edge wear to plates and closed tear to another in first volume, contents loose or becoming disbound in covers; covers faded with a few corners exposed, spine ends frayed. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. An unusual and apparently scarce children's book with each volume dedicated to a class of animals, mammals, birds, reptiles and fish. While the depictions of animals themselves seem to be "oil printed," the backgrounds suggest some hand-coloring as well. (4)View Bloomsbury Auctions next auction.Similar lots up for auction |
