Contemporary purple half calf over marbled paper-covered boards. Condition: light soiling to title of vol.I with small section of lower outer blank corner torn away, occasional light spotting; small splits to joints of vols. I and IV, light scuffing to extremities. Provenance: John Eberhardt (early signatures); Lynn Abbott Trust. [with:] Oliver GOLDSMITH. A History of the Earth and Animated Nature. London, Edinburgh & Dublin: A. Fullarton & Co., 1850. 9 original parts, large 8vo (261 x 178 mm). 2pp. "To the Public" leaf at the front of the 1st part. Uncolored engraved portrait of the author, two engraved additional titles with hand-colored vignettes, 72 hand-colored engraved plates. Original cloth-backed yellow/orange card printed covers. Condition: occasional light spotting or soiling, pp. 437/8 creased, pp.233-6 and 237-240 crudely opened; some soiling to covers, heaviest to parts 1 and 9, some small splits or slight fraying to cloth at backstrips. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. rare in the original parts: a generally fine unsophisticated set . Strangely, the prospectus mentions an issue in 18 parts and another in 36, but not the present form in nine. [and:] [A salesman's specimen booklet, to be used to collect subscribers' names and to advertise:] A History of the Earth and Animated Nature. Edinburgh & London: A. Fullarton & Co., [n.d. but circa 1855 or later]. Large 8vo (250 x 165mm). Uncolored engraved portrait of the author, two engraved additional titles with hand-colored vignettes, 20 hand-colored engraved plates. 5ll. (of 6) of blank subscription forms at back. Original oatmeal cloth. Condition: some light spotting and marginal soiling, 1 leaf of subscription forms removed; binding soiled, spine chipped, surface damge to recto of front free endpaper. A rare ephemeral item.(14)
