Contemporary purple half calf over marbled paper-covered boards. Condition: light soiling to title of vol.I with small section of lower outer blank corner torn away, occasional light spotting; small splits to joints of vols. Uncolored engraved portrait of the author, two engraved additional titles with hand-colored vignettes, 72 hand-colored engraved plates. Original cloth-backed yellow/orange card printed covers. Condition: occasional light spotting or soiling, pp. 437/8 creased, pp.233-6 and 237-240 crudely opened; some soiling to covers, heaviest to parts 1 and 9, some small splits or slight fraying to cloth at backstrips. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. rare in the original parts: a generally fine unsophisticated set . Strangely, the prospectus mentions an issue in 18 parts and another in 36, but not the present form in nine. Original oatmeal cloth. Condition: some light spotting and marginal soiling, 1 leaf of subscription forms removed; binding soiled, spine chipped, surface damge to recto of front free endpaper.
