Edinburgh: published by the proprietor, [1835-]1839-1840. 2 volumes, in four parts, bound in one volume, folio (332 x 235 mm). Four letterpress titles, 130 hand-colored engraved plates. Modern dark green morocco, covers ruled in gilt, spine tooled and letetred in gilt, marbled endpapers. Condition: overall light toning. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. first edition of this attractive work. Macgillivray was a gifted and prolific naturalist, artist and writer. A contemporary and friend of both Charles Darwin and John James Audubon, he colaborated with the latter on the writing of his Ornithological Biography (Edinburgh: 1831-1839, 5 vols).
