RICHARDSON, John (1787-1865). Fauna Boreali-Americana; or the Zoology of the Northern Parts of British America. London: John Murray, 1829-1831. Parts I-II (only of 4) in 2 volumes, 4to (270 x 220 mm). Half titles. 78 plates (28 etched plates of mammals by Thomas Landseer, some printed in brown, 26 with hand-coloring, 50 hand-colored lithographic plates of birds, all? by William Swainson). Modern red half morocco, spines gilt, t.e.g. Condition: scattered marginal spotting to a few plates in part 2, intermittent faint offsetting from plates onto text. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. first editions of the bird and quadruped sections of this important natural history of the fur trading regions. The work was completed in four volumes, the third on fishes, the fourth on insects. Richardson took part in Sir John Franklin's two successful overland expeditions. "The influence which this work exerted cannot well be overstated... it was the unique source of inspiration of numberless writers upon the same subject, and it continues to be a standard authority" (E.
