Part IV and VIII only (of 8), folio (Vol. IV, 345 x 260 mm; Vol. VIII, 378 x 290 mm). 95 fine hand-colored lithographic plates (IV, 48; VIII, 47). Vol. IV- original cloth-backed blue paper-covered boards with cloth tips, letterpress and engraved title to upper cover, letterpress on lower cover, blue paper engraved title strip laid onto spine (as issued?). Vol. VIII- Modern red half cloth. Condition: Vol. IV: half-title and title lightly spotted, scattered faint spotting to a few plates and pages of text; covers lightly soiled, edges rubbed, paper title strip on spine rubbed with some loss, endpapers spotted, Vol VIII: foxing to several plates and pages of text, one plate cut down and loosely inserted; light wear to extremities. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. first editions with 97 exceptional plates. vol IV in original boards. "The descriptions of many of the fruits are taken from an earlier work [Bivort, Album de pomologie], but the greater number are original... This work had a great success and remains the classical work of reference, with Bivort's Album for varieties of Belgian fruit" (Bunyard). This annual was published over eight years, from 1853-1860, and was a success at the time but is now surprisingly difficult to find complete: only two two complete sets are listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty years. Cf. BM(NH) I,p.128; cf. Bunyard, p.441; cf. Oak Spring Pomona 53. (2)ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
