BROOKSHAW, George (1751-1823). The Horticultural Repository, containing delineations of the best varieties of the different species of English Fruits. London: Coe for Sherwood, Jones & Co., [1820] - 1823. 2 volumes, 8vo (245 x 160mm). Half-titles. 98 fine hand-coloured engraved plates (7 folding). Contemporary red half morocco over marbled paper-covered baords, spines in five compartments with wide semi-raised bands, the bands highlighted with filllets and tooling in gilt, lettered in gilt in the second and fourth compartments. Condition: some light spotting or offsetting; spines slightly faded, slight scuffing, uncut. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. a large unsophisticated copy, rarely found uncut, of a work entirely devoted to edible fruit and nuts: the final posthumous publication from the author of the Pomona Britannica. "It is hoped... that the present work... will... form a suitable monument to [Brookshaw's] genius and talent." (preface). The work, issued periodically, was completed in July 1823: Brookshaw had died in Greenwich during the previous winter. The folding plates are erratically numbered, sometimes with two numbers, sometimes just one: the complete sequence of numbering is 1-38, 39/40, 41-42, 43/44, 45-46, 47/48, 49-50, 51/52, 53-55, 57-58, 59/60, 61-104, each plate with associated text.
