SOWERBY, James (1757-1822) and Sir James Edward SMITH (1759-1828). English Botany; or, Coloured Figures of British Plants, with their essential characters, synonyms, and places of growth. London: 1790-1810. 36 volumes bound in 32 (including a separate index volume), 8vo (235 x 140 mm). 2592 hand-colored engraved plates. Vols.I-XXI: contemporary half russia over blue paper-covered boards, gilt ruling to covers, the flat spines divided into six compartments by double gilt fillets, lettered in the second compartment, numbered in the fourth, the others with repeat decoration in blind; Index vol.: bound to match in half calf, spine titled in gilt longitudinally. Condition: occasional light spotting and offsetting, several plates with soft creasing; occasional soiling to covers, some minor rubbing and cracking to spines. Provenance: John Shewell (Clapham Common, London, early bookplate); Lynn Abbott Trust. a fine set of the first edition of 'one of the most celebrated of all british floras' (Henrey II p.141) the first comprehensive survey of British flora.
