STEPHENSON, John (1790-1864), & James Morss CHURCHILL (1796?-1863). Medical Botany; or Illustrations and Descriptions of the Medicinal Plants ... New Edition. Edited by Gilbert T. Burnett.
London: printed for John Churchill, 1834-1836. 3 volumes, 8vo (237 x 140 mm). 187 hand-colored plates (including a number of fine aquatints and 5 folding plates) by W. Clark(e) or Weddell after Clark(e) or G. Reid and others. Contemporary half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, spines gilt in five compartments with wide raised bands, the bands highlighted in gilt, lettered in the second and fourth compartments, the others with simple repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers.Condition: plates 99, 106 and 127 shaved into the image area, small tears to plates 109 and 132, occasional light spotting; extremities lightly scuffed, small chip to head of spine of vol.I. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. a good set of the second revised edition with beautiful plates. It seems that the first edition of this work was published in an effort to update and replace William Woodville' famous Medical botany (published initially in two editions: the first 1790-1794, and a second in 1806-1810). "Soon after the first edition [of the present work] was completed [1827-1831], every copy was disposed of, and both Authors having left London, Professor Burnett was engaged to conduct the present edition through the press ... such emendations ... as seemed necessary, were made by [him]... both in the Plates and Letter-press, up to the close of the Second Volume, when the estimable man was removed by death. The remaining portion has been brought out under the careful superintendence of Mr. Churchill". It is interesting to note that, perhaps prompted by the succcess of the first edition of this work, a third edition of Woodville, edited by W.J. Hooker, was published in 1832. BM(NH) p.2016; cf. Nissen BBI 1891 (1st edition only).(3)
