SWEET, Robert (1783-1835). Cistineæ. The Natural Order of Cistus, or Rock-Rose; illustrated by coloured figures & descriptions of all the distinct species, and the most prominent varieties, that could be at present procured in the gardens of Great Britain; with the best directions for their cultivation and propagation. London: James Ridgway, "1825-1830" [but later?]. 8vo (253 x 160 mm). 112 hand-coloured engraved plates by S.Watts or Weddell after J., M. or W. Hart or Mrs Margaret Read Brown. Original green pebble-grained cloth, the covers blocked in blind, the flat spine gilt. Condition: some general overall light toning, title browned and slightly stained, plate 59 with small tear affecting image area, lower outer blank corners of first 13 plates rounded, small sections of lower outer blank corners of plates 41,109-112 lacking, occasional small splits to blank inner margins of about 20 plates; rebacked with original spine laid down, recent endpapers. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. first edition, ?second issue, in a remainder binding. The Cistaceae or Rockrose family of flowering shrubs are widely spread with species occuring naturally in North and South America, Europe, west and central Asia, north Africa and the Cape Verde Islands.
