SWEET, Robert (1783-1835). Geraniaceae. The Natural Order of Gerania, illustrated by coloured figures and descriptions.
London: for James Ridgway, 1820-1830. 5 volumes, 8vo (222 x 140 mm). 500 hand-coloured engraved plates by S. Watts after Edwin Dalton Smith and M. Hart, often heightened with gum arabic, numbered 1-400 in the first four volumes and 1-100 in the fifth, supplementary volume. Contemporary green half morocco and pebble-grained cloth, spine in six compartments, gilt, lettered in second and third, g.e. Condition: intermittent offsetting from plates, occasional minor spotting; generally light rubbing to spine ends and corners with a few corners exposed. Provenance: Lynn Abbott Trust. first edition of an important and decorative work on the geranium with much information on their successful cultivation by this polymath naturalist (accomplished in botany,ornithology as well as horticulture). A native of Devon, Sweet apprenticed under his half-brother James at Ham Green, residence of Richard Bright. He later worked as a nurseryman at Stockwell, Fulham and Chelsea and was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1812.
