An early Southern League medal from season 1896-97, in 15ct. gold by Croneen of New Brompton, the obverse inscribed SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP, 2ND DIVN., DARTFORD, 1897 This medal relates to only the third season of Southern League Football. Dartford FC won the 2nd Division title In 1896-97. The recipient's name was never engraved on the medal. In the football club's early years they fluctuated between the Southern, Kent and West Kent Leagues. They had been formed in 1888 by members of Dartford Working Men's Club.
