A b&w period photograph of the first ever United States national soccer team to participate in an official international match, pictured before the game against Sweden in Stockholm 20th August 1916, 15 by 20cm., 6 by 8in. The US team won this match 3-2. USA played two unofficial internationals against Canada in 1885 and 1886, and also medalled in the 1904 St Louis Olympic Games soccer tournament, but the official international match v Sweden in 1916 is recognised as the true birth of the national team.
