Early Anti-Slavery Plaque Depicting A Slave In Chains c. 1795, Anti-Slavery Plaque, "Humanity," Depicting a Kneeling Slave in Chains, Cast Iron, Choice Near Mint. This impressive cast iron plaque, measuring 5.25" x 3.5" in size, has a high relief depiction of a chained slave, kneeling either in prayer or asking for mercy, surrounded by a high relief beaded border. This plaque is unsigned and unmarked, the back being completely blank, and may be English in origin. It appears to have been copper plated, and is now beautifully patinated to a slight green color. Two iron wires at the top, possibly for hanging, have been cut off. This design was widely used in England in the 1790's on a series of anti-slavery tokens. A great, early, and now quite attractive Anti-Slavery Relic. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
