Printed "Pittsylvania County" Tax Form For 20 Slaves July 15, 1839, "Pittsylvania County" Tax Form Listing Tax on Slaves, Very Fine. This Partially-printed Document is Signed, "Allen Wommack" measuring 4.75" x 8" and listing various taxable items he owned. To be given to the Sheriff of the county, each taxable item is listed in amounts and the payment of taxes. Included are "18 Poor rates, 18 County levies, 20 Slaves, 6 Horses and 400 acres of land"--for which he owed a total of $37.63. Wommack endorses the back of this tax form, with docketing indicating he made payment on July 15, 1839. Age-toned, with some ink showing through along the bottom margin, not detracting from the overall presentation of the item. A simple, yet clear example of how African Americans were taxable chattel before the Civil War. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
