Controversy Over A Slave Girl November 10, 1840, Manuscript Document Regarding the Arbitration of a Controversy Over The Sale of a Slave, Choice Fine. 11.75" x 7.5", top center of the document has been glued to a cardstock backing. Paul Jones and Henry W. Didlake were given the task of arbitrating the sale of "a negro girl named Emiline" by Peyton Leftwich to Eliza R. Perry. For reasons undisclosed, Perry sought to annul the sale, but Jones found "nothing either in the evidence nor in the statements of the Parties themselves to induce or annul the contract..." Signed by both Jones and Didlake. Age-toned with edge-splits and watermarks; beautiful script that remains clear and precise. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
