Woodblock Printing Plate of African American Worker c. 1870s, Woodblock Printing Plate of African American Worker, Accompanied by Print Sample, Choice Extremely Fine. This large, original, hand-engraved, 9.5" x 4.75" x 3/4" woodblock printing plate, depicting a Black man dressed in work trousers, black shoes, jacket, striped shirt and knotted tie, carrying a brimmed hat in one hand and a small book in the other, leaning against a large bale. Illustrations such as this one were used to depict both free and enslaved African Americans during the 19th century, and this may have been used in a theater program for a production of "Uncle Tom's Cabin." This woodblock is in exceptional condition, being composed of several blocks fastened seamlessly together. Black ink highlights the engraved imagery and recesses of the block producing an attractive appearance. Accompanied by a printed impression on newsprint. Ex-Sotheby's Sale 7683, June 26, 2001. (2 items) Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
