"Arms of the United States" Historic Liverpool Pitcher

c. 1815, Liverpool Pitcher: "ARMS OF THE UNITED STATES - COME BOX THE COMPASS," Choice Extremely Fine.
7" tall and 5" at its widest point, this Liverpool pitcher has a congruous ceramic handle, with handpainted lines along the rim and base, decorative florettes on the grip and under the spout, and black transfers on either side: "ARMS OF THE UNITED STATES" and "COME BOX THE COMPASS." "Arms of the United States" (the Coat of Arms, that is) features an heraldic eagle with a shield for a body. Wings outstretched, the eagle clutches arrows in one talon, an olive branch in the other, 16 stars above, and a banner reading "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its great curved beak. Beneath the eagle, a wide banner reads, "MAY SUCCESS ATTEND OUR AGRICULTURE TRADE AND MANUFACTURES." The transfer image on the other side of the pitcher features an intricate compass with a banner above, reading: "Come Box the Compass". Below, there is a brief history of the compass's development, in full: "Invented by Murphy a Dutchman AD 1229 first exhibited at Venice 1260 Improved by Giora of Naples 1309 its declination discovered by Hartman 1538." A man stands to one side of the compass with a wound cord in hand; to the other side of the compass, a ship sails the open sea. There are some minor incongruities on the surface of the pitcher, likely as made, which do not affect the quality of the transfer images. A lovely and historic item for display.
