Circa 1925, marked ''Richard Ginori / S. Christoford / Milano / Made in Italy / and with further signature ''Gio Ponti …'' and numbered ''305 P'', depicting the tired pilgrim ''Il Pellegrino Stanco'', on an integral cartouche-form base, glazed in black, grey, amber and yellow, 9.75'' H x 8'' W x 6'' D, est:$10,000/15,000. Literature: The same model is illustrated in ''Gio Ponti, Ceramiche 1923-1930. Le opere del Museo Ginori di Doccia''. Milan: 1983, p. 161, fig. 423. The same model, polychromed, is illustrated in L. Manna, ''Gio Ponti Le Maioliche''. Milan: 2000, p. 38, fig. 26. Note: Gio Ponti was born in Milan in 1891 and graduated with a degree in architecture from the Milano Politechnico in 1921. Two years later, Ponti became Artistic Director for the renowned ceramics firm of Richard Ginori, where during his seven year tenure he transformed the company into a paradigm of modern industrial design. He focused on simple forms and neoclassic inspiration. This model, in the same color palette, was sold, Gio Ponti: A Collection, Sotheby's, Milan, April 18, 2005, lot 13 (10,560 Euros). Provenance: Acquired by the present owner from the Estate of Red Skelton
Condition reportGood condition overall. Colors quite deep and rich. General light marks and scratches to surface commensurate with age. With a fine craquelure to surface overall. Does not affect stability of surface. No evidence of overpainted restoration under blacklight. AS-IS. ALL SALES FINAL.
