Description
Mercury Atlas MA-5 Spacecraft Hatch Shingle
(Approx. 26" tall, 11" wide at the top, and 16" wide at the bottom.) MA-5, launched on November 29, 1961 and carrying the chimp Enos, was the first American spacecraft to orbit the Earth with a live passenger. This successful 3 hour, 21 minute flight served as the final test before John Glenn's historic orbital flight less than three months later. This shingle was one of two that covered the spacecraft’s hatch; it is composed of Rene 41, a nickel-based steel alloy, and served as an outer thermal protection layer. It bears the letters "U N" (first two letters of "UNITED") and "S T" (the first two letters of "STATES") painted in white. Professionally mounted and framed (to 35.25 x 24"). ALSO included are three photographs showing the launch of the MA-5, recovery and the spacecraft on display at the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science, which have also been professionally matted and framed (to 25.5 x 16.25"). Rare opportunity to own this important piece of Mercury equipment. This item realized over $40,000 in a prior Christies auction.
