Probably late 19th century, marked ''Marpe 937 Dresden'' and with crescent and crown, one with Hunt & Roskell hallmark and additional Victorian marks, a matched or near pair, each with a triton supporting a nautilus shell, over an oval wave-chased base edged in spume, after the model attributed to William Theed, 2 pcs, 4.5'' H x 5'' W x 3.25'' D, 38 oz tw approximately, est:$5000/7000. Note: This form has been attributed to the sculptor William Theed (1764-1817), based on the similarities with his bronze statue of ''Thetis returning from Vulcan with Arms for Achilles'', made for George IV, which the Royal Goldsmiths Rundell, Bridge and Rundell cast in 1829. Theed worked for Rundell's from 1803 as head designer and principal modeler and remained with the firm until his death. A set of four cellars of the same model, bearing the Hunt & Roskell mark were offered Sotheby's, New York, May 20, 2004, lot 28. Variations on this model have also been produced by Paul Storr (in the British Royal Collection and the Al-Tajir Collection), and William Pitts (a set of four sold from the Collection of Audrey Love, Christie's, New York, October 19, 2004, lot 232 [$31,070]). It appears that the cellars offered here are of German manufacture and may have been retailed by Hunt & Roskell
Condition reportGood condition overall. With slight variations to modeling and detailing between the two. One with Hunt & Roskell mark, as stated. General light marks, scratches and tarnishing commensurate with age and use. AS-IS. ALL SALES FINAL.
