Slave Trader Denies He is a Kidnapper or Speculator

Autograph Letter Signed, "S.J. Bothea" 1p. quarto, September 26, 1845, with integral address to "R.C. Hamer Sweat Swamp, So. Carolina." and reads in part: "...This will inform you that I sold your negroes through much difficulty to J.M. Commander for five hundred dollars, and it yet remains for you and Cosen James to make titles. I bound him in writing to send them west, you can see Cosen James and get a title by sale day to that affect for Commander, four hundred dollars was all that I could get offered for them by any man in town, owing to the shipment, and to send them to Charleston was out of the Question...I am quite unwell at present, but I must to do myself justice deny the charge of kidnapping or speculating on them..." Small portion removed, else VG.
