Securing the Civil Rights of Former Slaves - The Fo

Message of the President Of The United States, communicating In Compliance with a resolution of the Senate of the 9th instant, a list of the States whose legislatures have ratified the proposed 14th article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States, also a copy of the resolution of ratification, 60pp, 5-1/2" x 8-1/2," disbound, Washington, 1868, fine. President Johnson forwards to the Senate, from each states' legislatures,' their documents of ratification of the fourteenth amendment. The fourteenth amendment requires the states to provide equal protection under the law to all persons within their jurisdictions. The citizenship of African Americans was thereby established. The amendment forbids the states to abridge the privileges and immunities of U.S. citizens, to deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law. Of course, the "Jim Crow" state laws weakened the impact of this amendment which would later be strengthened by the Civil Rights efforts of 1965. An exceptional item and a cornerstone in the evolution of Civil Rights in America.
