Presentation copy inscribed on the front wrapper: "W.B. McReun(sp?), compliment of Gen. Meade,"of his book MAJOR GENERAL MEADE'S REPORT ON THE ASHBURN MURDER. [Atlanta: Printed on the local army press, 1868]. 130pp. Errata slip. The record of testimony pertaining to one of the most troublesome affairs during Meade's governance of the Southern District during the Reconstruction years. At midnight on March 30, 1868, a party of men wearing hoods and masks assassinated George W. Ashburn, a state Constitutional delegate. A white Radical, Ashburn shared a rooming house with African Americans at the northwest corner of 13th Street in Columbus. Nine men were charged with the murder, and there was evidence of collusion by local officials both in the murder itself and its aftermath. Lengthy extracts from the hearings are printed in this booklet, along with communications between Meade, Grant, Mills, and Barstow concerning the event. A primary document in the history of Klan violence and turmoil during Reconstruction. Very scarce. Original printed wrappers. Spine lightly chipped. A very good, clean copy.
