Autograph Letter Signed "Henry Brown" 1-1/4p. quarto, Richmond, Virginia, July 15, 1862, with integral address to Francis Stribling (1810-1874). Superintendent of the Western Lunatic Asylum of Virginia, bearing one stamp [missing 2nd] with RICHMOND, Va. and reads in part: "...I am sorry to [state] my sisters only surviving son (Rev. John C. Brown) immediately on reaching Charleston was taken as a prisoner by the Yankees, he being a chaplin in the Confederate army. With us there is but little more in the way of news except what you will see in the newspapers. Within the last few days, more than 2,000 of the Federal prisoners have been removed from the city, to an island in the river, near at hand. There are 77 hospitals, but these are rapidly diminishing in the number of the inmates, as all who are able to go home, are permitted to do so. I am kept busy every day, in the one assigned to me..."
