Autograph Letter Signed, "E.J. Earle" 1p. quarto, Evergreen, October 11, 1862, addressed to I.W. Hayne, Chief Dept. Justice & Police, in Columbia, South Carolina, and reads in part: "...I sent to the Executive council a petition signed by many of the most respectable citizens of Anderson District; praying that Alexander Campbell might not receive a license to manufacture whiskey for medical purposes, on grounds, 1st that the whiskey is not needed and 2nd that Mr. Campbell is not a suitable man. Through my ignorance I mailed the petition to His Excellency Go. Pickens as the chairman of the Ex. Council. I have since understood that it should have been mailed to you...If you should remain in any doubt about Mr. Campbell's suitability I beg leave to refer you to Hon. J.N. Whitner who I think has tried him frequently for different offences..." with integral cover addressed to Hayne with ANDERSON C.H. S.C. circular date stamp and straightline PAID. Good.
