This rare cover was mailed one month after the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, April 12-13, 1861. This is a Confederate cancel on a U.S. issue envelope. Confederate usage was permitted from April 12 to June 1, 1861. On May 6, 1861 the Confederate Congress declared war, and on May 20, North Carolina, the state to which this cover was sent, seceded from the Union. Fine.
