Appomattox North Carolina Parole

Sign In to see what this sold for

A rare war-date field printed Appomattox parole, April 10, 1865 issued to the surrendered veterans of Lee's Army of the Northern Virginia allowing them to go home after that army's historic capitulation, reading, in part: "THE BEARER Private N.[oel] E. Burton of Co. F, 13th Regt. of N. C. T., a Paroled Prisoner of the Army of Northern Virginia, has permission to go home and there remain undisturbed…". Signed and made official by the 13th North Carolina's commander Lt. Col. Elijah B. Withers who was severely wounded on July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg while an attacking member of McGowan's brigade on Meade surprised army at the then sleepy Pennsylvania hamlet. Usual wear from being carried by a homeward bound veteran, else very good.
