War-date Confederate soldier's letter by Sgt. Leonard Williams, Hampton Legion, South Carolina Cavalry, 3pp. 4to., ink, Bacon Race Church, Va. August 29, 1861, and reads in part: "...there is a probability of a fight near Fairfax, but there are 50,000 troops I understand between us & the enemy & unless there is apprehended a pitched battle we will not be needed. We however can know nothing of the designs of the Generals in command, it may be that our attack upon Arlington is intended . Maj. Perry will probably leave tomorrow...you must pay attention to the cleanliness of the room the negroes sleep in & that the room is ventilated at night & see that Steve bathes regularly & puts on clean clothes at proper times. I know, to carry out this will be troublesome but from what you tell me about Steve I think is necessary to take particular care of him & also see that he is warmly clothed & shod & kept out of bad weather. You had better begin now & secure enough woolen cloth to make all of them clothing for the winter, also get shoes now for them, heavy ones..." Fine.
