The Hampton Legion Needs Horse Feed

Sign In to see what this sold for

War-date Confederate soldier's letter by Sgt. Leonard Williams, Hampton Legion, South Carolina Cavalry, 2p. quarto, ink, Camp Wigfall, Virginia, January 25, 1862, and reads in part: "...I do not expect we will get away from these camps for several weeks, we have permission to move nearer Manassas in order to be more accessible to horse feed, but at present we are detained by bad roads & deficient teams. Maj. Butler is sick & will leave for home...I do not look for any movements of a military character for several weeks...I have not touched the coffee you sent me, am keeping it for hard times. We still get coffee but no sugar, transportation is so difficult, have you heard anything from our uniforms..." Fine.
