War-date Confederate officer's letter by Capt. Williams, 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, 2p. folio, ink & pencil, Camp Jackson, S. C., June 23, 1864, and reads in part: "...Capt. Gary on North Island is being shelled today, we hear the guns! Last week our picket lines were shelled, but it occasioned no excitement among the old troops only a little nervousness with the recruits. The news is still exciting from Va & Ga. I believe there is nothing so far discouraging. Grant is nearer Petersburg than I like, all the raiders are well punished & seem to be making their best speed to get into safe places. Johnson seems to be satisfied with his position & all accounts agree in the fine condition of spirits of his army, his reserves at Atlanta are numerous. I do not look for any reverses in Ga. The first time I have ever felt perfectly easy about that army. I feel confident that campaign will turn out well; in the meantime while Grant according to Yankee dispatches is gaining victories gold is steadily advancing & if the Yankees do not soon gain some success, there is no telling where gold will stop..." Fine.
