War-date Confederate officer's letter by Capt. Williams, 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, 2p. folio, ink, Camp Jackson, S. C., June 25, 1864, and reads in part: "...I hope James & Allen have visited you before now...Jim has had a hard time during his imprisonment, hope he may enjoy his visit...Clough is a miserable pest. I wish he be put off 30 or 40 miles from home. I scarcely know what to advise to be done with him, whenever he does anything that he deserves to be thrashed for send for Martin & tell him to give him to whip him severely & repeat it every time he deserves it & imprison him two or three days at a time & especially at night. Tell Ned to thrash the life nearly out of him or make him obey. I would like to have charge of him a month or two. I will try to get rid of him some way or other, this summer...Grant has more tenacity of purpose than any of his predecessors. I do not understand the situation of the armies very well now that they are this side of Richmond. They are in too close proximity to the RR to suit me & the fact that there were no telegrams from Richmond yesterday favors the idea that the RR is already in their possession. I fear that it is so. Johnson seems to be still master of the situation in Ga. I look for news this evening. The cavalry in Va have suffered pretty severely, but it must be remembered their ranks are full & a casualty of 20 per ct. makes a pretty heavy showing..." VG.
