HAMPTON, WADE (1819 - 1902) Confederate lieutenant general of cavalry whose daring exploits at Antietam, Gettysburg, and Petersburg won him fame in both North and South. War date A.E.S. on a small slip, removed from a larger document, "HdQrs Cavalry 24 March 1865" and writes in full: "Resp'ly forwarded See Majr Genl Wheeler's remarks. Wade Hampton Lieut Genl." Signature and text a tad light but still quite legible, one vertical fold, otherwise very good. Matted and framed with a carte-de-visite portrait of Hampton, half-length in uniform. Not examined out of frame.
