A good war-date KIA Union soldier's letter, written by Pvt. Richard K. Lunt, Co. A, 48th Mass. Vols, 4p. octavo, ink, Camp Banks, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, February 22, 1863, and reads in part: "...We have had 3 mails since we have been here but I didn't receive one from you out of either mail, but I got one from A.W. Greely, he is well. There is a good many sick in our Regt. on account of drinking the water it is not fit to drink unless boiled and let it stand...I have been out on picket...We have to stand all night no sleep the surgeon come round and gives us a wine glass of brandy or whiskey to keep them from having the shakes what you call fever and ague...We have the surgeon call at 7 oclock in the morning I have seen almost 100 soldiers waiting for medicines....Nims Battery is firing a salute for George Washington what would he say if he was alive now to see the country in such a state. As I am writing George Brown says that one of Co. B men is dead, the first one we have lost...". With original transmittal cover. Fine.
