A good war-date KIA Union soldier's letter, written by Pvt. Richard K. Lunt, Co. A, 48th Mass. Vols, 4p. octavo, ink, Camp Banks, Baton Rouge, La., May 17, 1863, and reads in part: "...Our Brigade is the only one in Baton Rouge. Dudley's Brigade has gone up to Port Hudson. Our Brigade is on the reserve so I don't think that we shall have to go up. Our Skedaddlers came yesterday, Sam Perkins, George Hines, and Albert Batchelder they left him sick at Fortress Monroe, there was 42 in all...Our Regt. is one of the healthiest in Baton Rouge, and is called 2d best in the place the 30th Mass being best...We have dress parade early in the morning...When Stone drills us he puts us right through but when O'Briens drills us he gives us rest and tells us stories, jokes and soforth, he is a nice man if he is an Irishman you would not know that he was an Irishman only by his talk, he talks a little might brogue...We have a great many Newburyport Heralds....I saw the piece that Capt.
