A good war-date Kentucky citizen's letter by G.A. Oglesby, 4p. octavo, ink, Webster County, Kentucky, July 10, 1864, and reads in part: "...we heard that Col. Sterling was killed and about 2 hundred of his men killed and captured...Guerillas are very plenty down here, worse than they ever was and they are recruiting very fast. I had 3 with me yesterday but they done no harm to me only inquired for pistols and shotguns and talk of taken my horse but didn't do it. James Pool was killed in town about 2 weeks ago by the rebels. Sam Allen taken prisoner but was released...We are getting along farming very well...I have got the best prospect for a good crop of corn I ever had, but no tobacco worth a damn, the cut worms eat it up ...I asked Mary about how she would like to see you fetch a fine lady dressed in silk...she says she expects she will see you come home if you have good luck a foot with your knapsack on your back and your Lincoln blues on...".
