A war-date Union officer's letter, written by Michigan native 1st Lt. Hiland H. Weaver, 3rd Iowa Battery, 2p. octavo, ink, Camp of 3rd Iowa Battery, Clarendon, Arkansas, Aug. 16, 1863, and reads in part: "...we arrived at this place last night all right being four days on the march it has been very hot a great many have given out especially of the Infantry it was so hot that they could not march over one or two miles without resting and the most we made in one day was thirteen miles...our forces captured two transports from the rebs day before yesterday. They had quite a little fight. Our loss was one killed and about a dozen wounded...I think we will stay here a few days before we take up the march for Little Rock..." VG.
