Union soldier's letter archive of five (5) letters by Pvt. Truman H. Hunter, Co. K, 2nd Vermont, KIA Savage Station, July 16, 1861-April 23, 1862, and reads in part: "...you wanted to know what regiment and company I was in it is third regiment and company D, the fourth company in the regiment the [name] of the company is The Tigers a good name...we had preaching in camp this afternoon...the Tigers have some of the best officers in the world, the company all love them...[8/9/61] I am on Bush Hill in Va. near Alexandria. I suppose you have heard all about the fight at Bull Run, I was there myself and know something about it. It is a hard place I tell you. We had to march a great ways to get there, we were almost tired out when we got there but as tired as we were we could fight some but not hard enough to whip them. They are tough but they can be whipped after a while you know we can do it, but we had to retreat a sad thing to think of. We lost everything we had...[Washington D.C.]there are only two boys of us that came from our village left here, one taken by the rebels the others gone home sick and gone. There were nine at first our Captain has gone home to get a new recruit of boys he will be here one week from next Saturday. I will tell you about our scouting party Co. K went out last friday only six got back yet they put another fellow and I on guard as pickets, we were relieved Saturday noon and came to camp as I am writing the others just came in...the rebels are eight miles the nearest...[Camp Griffin 30th 61]we have been building houses to live in this winter...I have to go out on picket in the morning...our regiment is very healthy now, some of the regt come this fall are very hard up. I wish the thing was done with, the war I mean. You wrote me that my brother had enlisted I have not seen him nor heard from him I wish you would write me and tell me what regt & company he is in...[4/28/62] we are in camp near Yorktown, we are right under the rebels noses making forts and rifle pits. Last night two hundred of our regt were making rifle pits within twenty rods of their pits it was a mean trick to the secesh, they don't like it but they can't help it. While we are at work they fire a volley into us but we get behind something & let them shoot, we return no shots, when they quit we go to work again. We work nights & sleep through the day so you see I don't feel much like writing..." VG.
