Shelling Ambushing Rebels in Tennessee

Sign In to see what this sold for

War-date Autograph Letter Signed by Lieutenant "A. Piatt Andrew" 21st Indiana Battery, Camp Near Carthage, Tennessee, May 7, 1863, 4p. octavo, and reads in part: "...Six months pay is due us. Of this we will receive four months. This settles up Uncle Sam's account to the first of March. The pay per month is $111.00, so I will receive $444.00. Quite an amount at one time...The rumor is strongly prevalent through the division, that a fight will soon come off at the front. From what can be learned by one not behind the curtain, the rumor seems well founded. It is believed the rebs will endeavor to force their way into Kentucky. If they make the attempt we shall have something to do. For the past two days rebel cavalry have been seen across the river. Day before yesterday they rode down to the bank of the river and fired upon a couple of the Eighty-ninth Ohio, who were fishing. No injury, however, was inflicted. After firing they concealed themselves among the trees near by, from which they were driven by a shell, and spherical case shot fired from our battery. The distance was about eight hundred yards. They were seen again yesterday morning, but at too great a distance for our guns to reach them. I do not know that I ever wrote what kind of guns we have, etc. Our battery is composed of six brass pieces - 12 pdrs. smooth bore - commonly called Napoleon pieces. The extreme range is about one mile, not quite..." Fine.
